Rab Mythic BTS
In December 2019, Rab asked us to shoot some last minute content for their award winning Ultra Mythic sleeping bag. This bag means business, it’s super light but has badass technology that keeps you warm when in extreme conditions. The ultimate winter expedition bag!
To guarantee quality images at a quick turnaround we took to the Swiss Alps where the forecast showed some a nice mix of an incoming snow storm and perfect blue skies. We needed to show the bag in all it’s mighty so a variety of conditions was favourable.
Usually we would make a full adventure out of something like this, set off into the back country and bivy overnight but being aware of the tightness of schedule we took the “easy” approach. Choosing one of our favourite ridge lines as a location, we took a snowmobile (and our trusty canine friend) up as far as we could before ski touring the rest. The idea was to shoot till blue hour and ski back down to our cars by torch light.
The first shoot went seamlessly as it was our “clear skies” shoot, the next one as you can guess was a little more adventurous due to the gnarlier conditions. Taking the same approach we picked a safe spot that was easily reachable by car and snowmobile so that we could pack up the same night and not actually bivvy.
Snowy conditions also meant wind, which isn’t the most fun to shoot in! Operating cameras in those kind of conditions can be cold and numbing on the hands, but as we were heading back to our warm cars and eventually our warm beds, it was definitely easier than most high alpine winter bivy shoots!
